Tema, June 10, GNA - Some residents of the Tema Metropolis have observed the three-day national mourning declared by President John Dramani Mahama, with a call on government to put in measures to avert a recurrence of the flood and fire disaster.

The residents said even though it was appropriate to mourn the people who perished and the thousands of people displaced by the fire and floods last Wednesday, the best memorial was the prevention of such calamities in future.

According to the residents, weather forecasts indicate that more rains were expected, therefore government must put in structures to ensure that flood incidents were reduced in Ghana especially in Accra.

They said it was unfortunate that successive governments were unable to put in structures to curb the perennial flooding.

Madam Esther Sintim-Misah, Former Assembly member for the Ashiboi Electoral Area, commended the President for declaring the mourning period as according to her, it would help in the psychological healing of victims.

Madam Sintim-Misah, however urged government and other stakeholders to fulfil their promises to victims and relatives of the deceased.

Meanwhile, most banking institutions in the Tema Metropolis observed the mourning with flags flying at half-mast at their premises, whilst red cloths have been draped at the entrances of some institutions, with a number of traders clad in mourning clothes.
