Unilever, Special Ice, others donate to flood victims

A leading fast moving consumer goods company, Unilever Ghana, has donated boxes soap, detergents, toothpaste and tea to the twin disaster victims.

The items were presented to Joy FM by Head of Corporate Affairs, Unilever Ghana, Gabriel Opoku-Asare.

The station is spearheading a massive relief effort to bring succour to victims and survivors of the twin flood and fire disasters that claimed more than a hundred and fifty lives.

Torrential rains Wednesday submerged large parts of the capital with the Kwame Nkrumah Circle, Avenor, Kaneshie, Adabraka, Mallam Junction being the worst hit.

An explosion at the state-owned Goil filling station near the Kwame Nkrumah Circle killed more than a hundred people.

The entire Circle area has been devastated with residents still scraping sludge and debris deposited by the floods five days after the disaster.

Many of the victims help to put their lives back in shape as they try to make sense of what happened.

In response to this, Joy FM, with the support of its listeners and partners has mobilised relief items which were distributed to the victims Saturday and Sunday.

Bales of used and new clothing, truckloads of sachet water, bags of rice, gallons of oil, bread rolls, bars of soap, detergents, and cooked food were distributed to the victims.

Contributing to the effort, Mr. Opoku-Asare presented Unilever’s contribution which he said was intended to help alleviate the suffering of the people.

He said the company was touched by the plight of the victims and hoped the donation will help clean their homes and put their lives in order.

Prison Service Donate
The Ghana Prisons Service Monday morning also presented the victims with 19,000 litres of water in two water tankers.

Many of the victims urgently need water to clean their homes and wash their belongings which they salvaged from the floods.

Personnel of the Prisons Service would not comment on the gesture except to say senior officers of the Service heard the cries of the victims on Joy FM about lack of water and decided to help.

More Water
Water distillers, Special Ice Company Ltd., donated 100 boxes bottled water also to support Joy FM’s relief efforts.

Human Resource Manager for the company said they saw the donation as the company’s contribution to humanity.
