Bolgatanga, May 24, GNA - The flag bearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Adoo over the weekend stated that political competition is competition of ideas and not personal attacks.

The flag bearer said this in Bolgatanga, after the interment of the Upper East Regional Chairman of the NPP, Mr Adams Mahama.

He said the attack on the Regional Chairman, which led to his death, was unwarranted and unfortunate.

Mr Mahama was on Wednesday night attacked by some persons, who poured acid on him. He sustained serious burns and was rushed to the Bolgatanga Regional Hospital where he was pronounced dead later on Thursday morning.

Nana Akufo-Adoo, who expressed his condolence to the family of the deceased said, the death of Mr Mahama was not only a blow to the NPP, but a high minus to democracy in the country.

'Ghana is a democratic state governed by the rule of law and not by violence. This is the time for our party to stand up and fight to resolve all our differences through civil means and not violent means', he stressed.

He noted that what happened to Mr Mahama could discourage other citizens, endowed with the knowledge and the expertise to contribute positively to the nation's development through politics and admonished the party members and Ghanaians in general to desist from such barbaric acts.

He impressed upon all party executives to bury their differences and renew their commitment to ensure that the party gains power in 2016.

Nana Akufo-Adoo described the late Mahama as exceptional, loyal, dependable and helpful, and that, he did so much to reinvigorate the party's activities in the Region.

He assured that the party would support the welfare of the family of the deceased, particularly the education of his children, and urged the leadership of the party in the region to follow the footsteps of the late Mahama.

The Minority Leader in Parliament, Mr Kyei Mensah, who described the late Mahama as 'a man of tremendous magnetized influence' said not only did he play a significant role in the development of the party , but also played a major role in the religious and social arena.

He said Ghanaians should not allow such inhuman act to happen again and called on the security agencies to ensure that the perpetrators were brought to book to serve as deterrent to others.

The deceased left behind a wife and four children and was buried at the Public cemetery at Yikine, near the Bolgatanga Municipality, after party members and other members of the public had paid their last respect to him at his family house.

The funeral was attended by officials of most of the political parties, including the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), the People's National Convention (PNC), the Convention People's Party, (CPP), and the Progressive People's party (PPP).
