Yendi Assembly gives educational package to needy pupils

Yendi (N/R), Aug. 12, GNA - The Yendi District Assembly has initiated a 111.1 million-cedi package for brilliant but needy students in the Yendi District.

Sixty per cent of the funds would be allocated to primary school pupils, 35 per cent to the junior secondary school (JSS) students, while five per cent would be allocated to children with special needs. Mr Mohammad Habib Tijani, Yendi District Chief Executive announced this at the inauguration of a ten-member district selection committee of the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFUND) at Yendi on Wednesday. The committee is made up of educationists, representatives of Parent- Teacher Associations (PTAs), District Oversight Committees, other government officials and NGOs.

Mr Tijani said it was expected that, 470 girls and 314 boys in primary school would be awarded 85,000 cedis per pupil, while 212 girls and 141 boys in the JSS would be given 110,000 cedis per student. He said 5.6 million cedis would also be used to support pupils with special needs such as orphans, the physically challenged and children of unemployed parents.

The DCE advised the committee members to bring their expertise and experiences to bear on the selection process and not to allow the parents to influence them.
