CRISIS MEETING TODAY – TO DISCUSS LIQUIDATION OF BONTE MINES – PGS. 1 & 3

Officials of the Ministry of Mines, the Minerals Commission and PriceWater house Coopers are to meet today to discuss the liquidation of Bonte Mines in the Ashanti Region and other related issues.

Mr Ohene Okine, Chief Director, Ministry of Mines, made this known yesterday when the paper sought to find out about the government's position on the issue.

The liquidation of the mines last March was said to have caused the loss of about 400 jobs, left behind a debt of $18 million, owed to public and private institutions and a degraded land stretching more than 18 kilometres.

It is said that government has not made any comment since the liquidation of the mines and today's meeting has been scheduled to brief the Minister of Mines, Mrs. Cecilia Bannerman about the developments, after which government is expected to come out with an official statement on the issue.
