Savana Signatures trains teachers on Aflatoun Curriculum

Tamale, March   21, GNA - Some selected teachers and staff of the Ghana Education Service (GES) in the Northern Region have undergone a training on the Aflatoun Curriculum to help impart comprehensive sexual, social and financial education to their   pupils.

The teachers, numbering 46, were selected from 23 basic schools in seven districts of the Northern Region whiles the GES staff, who are School Health Education Programme (SHEP) Coordinators at those districts, also participated.

The districts included Sagnarigu, Mion, East Mamprusi, Central Gonja, Sawla-Tuna-Kalba, Tamale Metro and Savelugu/Nanton Municipality.

The training, which ended in Tamale on Thursday, was organized by the Savana Signatures, an information communication technology oriented non-governmental organization, under projects known as 'The World starts with Me' and 'Young People in-charge Project (YPIC)'.

The YPIC project is an integrated concept of Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE), Social and Financial Education (SFE) and youth friendly services for young people in and out-of-school.

The projects are aimed at helping young people in northern Ghana to lead healthy and productive lives to reduce new HIV and AIDS infections, sexually transmitted infections, and teenage pregnancy.

It was also to give young people financial education to empower them to understand savings, spending and how to manage limited resources.

Savana Signatures is implementing the two-year four months projects, which started in January this year,   in 23 basic schools in the region and the teachers trained were to facilitate the integrated model in the schools.

Mr Frederick Nuuri-Teg, Project Officer of Savana Signatures said the YPIC project was aimed at establishing a strong link between the schools, health facilities and financial institutions within the communities.

Mr Nuuri-Teg said young people in project schools were already going through CSE programmes, which included 'My World My Life, and The World starts With Me,' adding that, they would be introduced to the Aflatoun curriculum, which would provide them with Social and Economic empowerment education.

He added that the youth in project areas would further get access to youth friendly services at health facilities in their community.

He said out-of-school youth would be engaged by trained peer educators to provide them with CSE and SFE in their communities as well as have access to youth friendly services from health service providers within their communities.

Madam Benedicta Aovara, SHEP Coordinator at the Savelugu/Nanton Municipality lauded the projects, saying it would help to better inform the youth on sex issues and help guide their behaviour.
