Assess the Government's performance and return it to power -President

Agona Nyakrom (C/R), Aug. 8, GNA - President John Agyekum Kufuor on Saturday asked Ghanaians to assess the performance of the government under the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and return it to power to continue with its efficient and effective policies and programmes.

He said Ghanaians should ignore the discordant voices being made against the government's achievements and allegations of vote rigging and reiterated the government's pledge to ensure peaceful, free and fair elections unprecedented in Ghana's history.

President Kufuor made the call when addressing separate durbars of the chiefs and people of Agona Nyakrom and Agona Swedru to mark their annual "Akwanbo" festival.

The durbars climaxed President Kufuor's two-day official visit to the Central Region where he addressed similar durbars at Awutu-Breku, Agona Nsaba, Ajumako-Bisease, Yamoransa, Ekumfi-Narkwa and Gomoa Apam. President Kufuor assured the people of Agona Nyakrom that the Ministry of Roads and Transport and the Central Regional Co-ordinating Council would review the award of road contracts in the area to ensure that more efficient works were performed.

He said with the rapid expansion and increase in population and commercial activities at Agona Swedru, the area would within the next few years be upgraded into a Municipality to befit its status.

President Kufuor said the town had many prospects for development in future after the completion of the Mallam Junction Yamoransa road, rehabilitation of the Kwanyaku Water project with a 171 billion cedi financial assistance from the Dutch government and improvement in other basic amenities.

He appealed to the traditional authorities and the District Assembly to intensify education on the HIV/AIDS pandemic and teenage pregnancy with the increase in the population especially of the youth in the area.

Okofo Katakyie Nyarko Eku X, Omanhene of the Agona Nyakrom Traditional Area appealed to the Government to upgrade the health centre in the town to a full fledge hospital as well as improvement in telecommunications and other communication facilities.

He appealed to the District Assembly to re-introduce the Sanitary Inspectorate Unit to improve on the unsanitary conditions in the town and the environment.

Nana Kobina Botwe II, Omanhene of Agona Swedru Traditional Area, commended the Government in its efforts to improve the socio-economic development of the country and the sterling leadership of President Kufuor in Ghana and the West African Sub-Region.

He said under the leadership of President Kufuor Ghana had taken the correct steps in the process of democratisation and urged all and sundry to nurse the process to succeed.

Nana Botwe appealed to politicians to conduct the electioneering campaign in peace and with respect to themselves and the people from whom they were seeking votes.

He asked the media to ensure unbiased reporting and analysis during the campaign period.
