Veep calls for enforcement of laws to ensure discipline

Tema, Aug 06, GNA - Vice President Alhaji Aliu Mahama has called for punishment for those who flout laws to instil discipline in the society.

"Respect of the law is an essential element of discipline and good citizenship. Therefore, enforcement of some would be an important aspect of campaign to inculcate greater discipline in the citizenry."

Vice President Mahama made the call in a speech read on his behalf by Mr Samuel Evans Ashong Narh, Tema Municipal Chief Executive, during a public education programme on road traffic regulations and sanitation. It was in connection with his campaign to instil greater discipline in the society.

He called on the communities to set aside a day in a month to do communal labour and sensitise the public on the need for environmental cleanliness.

The Vice President said, respect for the law is an essential element of discipline and good citizenship.

"Leaving goats, cattle to roam on the roads, littering, spitting, doing your thing in plastics bags, dangerous driving, getting to work or being late for appointments, cheating during examinations must all stop, he said.

Mr Sodja Mensah, Tema Municipal Environmental Chief Officer, said his outfit has embarked on house-to-house inspection and has, between April and June, prosecuted 79 people for sanitary offences.
