Workers Of Sentuo Steel Maltreated In Tema

The present day Ghanaian worker is faced with serious economic challenges ranging from poor salary coupled with no re-numeration, increased in transportation fares, food prices, demand and payment of school fees, increased in utility tarrifs and rent.

Not to mention the meagre amount of monies taken home by some workers as salaries, these monies are in most cases not paid on time to motivate the worker, and in most instances these workers work for months without being paid by their employers.

The most astronomical aspect of the problem is that these employers demand much effort from their workers without thinking about what they will eat, let alone how they will keep their home running and their families going.

This is the terrible situation some workers face at Sentuo Steel Company in Tema.

Sentuo Steel is situated some 60 kilometres away from Tema Oil Refinery at the Heavy Industrial Area, Tema.

According to a worker who narrated his ordeal, indigenous workers are been maltreated by Chinese workers.

He added that some workers were sacked from the company permanently because they were a minute late.

The case was reported to the labour union but it has fallen on deaf ears. He said management misled the Labour union that the lowest person at the company is being paid 1,500 Ghana Cedis but their monthly wages are not up to 400 Cedis per month.

The worker noted that management failed to increase the wages for the past three years and some essential bonuses and incentives such as risk allowance.

These workers he added are denied joining trade unions.

“Also, the Managing Director promised to increase the wages for the past four months and till this time I am writing to you, nothing meaningful has been done about it and at the look at things nothing shall ever be done thanks to our own black administrators at the top level of the company who take bribes from the Chinese just to allow them cheat us,” he stated.
