Bolgatanga, Feb 20, GNA - Action Aid Ghana (AAG) in collaboration with the Regional Inter Sectoral Gender Network (REGSEGNET) on Monday donated campaign materials to some selected assembly women contestants in the Upper East Region towards the forthcoming District Level Elections (DLE).
In all nine hundred posters were distributed to the twelve beneficiaries drawn from the Talensi, Nabdam, Binduri and Pusiga Districts with each of them receiving 75 posters and five T. Shirts with their pictures and campaign messages emboldened on them .
Mr James Daud -Abangos, the Chairman of the REGSIGNET who presented the items to them expressed regret that the low number of women who had filed for the DLE and stated that in 2010, 70 women filed to contest with only 23 of them winning the election.
'This year however, the situation is even worse. Out of the total number of 1,004 candidates who had filed to contest for the DLE, 946 are men and only 58 women. It is even shameful to note that the Bawku Municipality and the Nabdam District has no female candidates,' he said.
Mr Daud -Abangos who took the aspirants through preparation of manifestoes and campaign messages entreated them to do their campaigns devoid of insults.
He said even though the number of women who filed to contest was low there was a possibility that a good number of them would win the election since many stakeholders had expressed interest to support more women.
He however appealed to the government to appoint more women to help address the huge gender gap, particularly at the municipal and district assemblies so as to facilitate development.
Mr Alosibah Azam, the Secretary of REGSEGNET impressed upon all stakeholders to encourage more people to turn out for the forthcoming DLE and stated that just like the Presidential and Parliamentary Elections, more importance should be attached to the DLE.
Out of the 53 candidates who filed to contest for DLE in the Builsa South District, 49 are men and four are women. In the Builsa North, out of the 69, four are women. The Kassena Nankana Municipal had 91 candidates with 87 of them being men whilst four are women.
In the Kassena Nankana West out of the 137 candidates, 128 are men whilst nine of them are females. The Bongo District had 115 candidates with 107 men and eight females. Talensi had 62 candidates with 54 men and 8 females.
The Nabdam District and Bawku Municipal had 33 and 53 all male candidates respectively while Bawku West had 104 with only three being females.
The Pusiga District had 53 candidates with 51 of them being men and two women, the Garu -Tempane District had 93 candidates with 83 men and 10 women.
The Binduri District had 42 candidates with 40 men and two women, whilst the Bolgatanga Municipal had 99 candidates with 95 men and four women. GNA EN-GB X-NONE X-NONE
