NDC to demonstrate against GTV

The National Democratic Congress (NDC's) deputy national campaign manager, Elvis Afriyie Ankra, has hinted The Chronicle that, the NDC would be hitting the streets soon to demonstrate against the national television station, GTV, for what he described as biased coverage of political events, to the detriment of the NDC.

In an interview with The Chronicle, Elvis Ankra expressed gross dissatisfaction at GTV's granting of extensive TV coverage to the New Patriotic Party (NPP), but with minimum or no TV coverage for the opposition parties, especially the NDC.

He further told this reporter that, “on the 5th of this month, GTV aired for almost 45 minutes, the vice president's previous tour to parts of the northern region while the NDC's leader, Prof. Mills' tours were hardly aired, let alone enjoy such a 'broadcast paradise.''

When reminded that the NDC grossly used all the state - owned media to its advantage when in power, and much to the over stressed detriment of the opposition, especially the NPP, Elvis Ankra had this to say: “In a state of democracy, it is very uncalled for to replicate the mistakes of a preceding government, that is why the whole process of democracy is meant to be dynamic.”

“Everybody will recollect that the NPP, when in opposition, sought a court redress on our use of the state-owned media, especially, GTV, of which the ruling of the court ended affirmative in their favour, hence I do not understand why the NPP of all should adopt the same practices they once preached against,” he added.

When the Public Relations Officer of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation was contacted by The Chronicle, he said, “I think this particular issue has been channelled to the National Media Commission for a redress by the NDC, hence it would not be appropriate for any further comment on the same issue; meanwhile sections of the Greater Accra youth wing of the NDC had also earlier threatened to demonstrate against GTV, which is yet to occur.'
