Professor John Evans Fiifi Atta Mills, flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), will name his running mate at a mammoth rally at Cape Coast in August.

'The Evening News' can report authoritatively that the man who will get the nod is Mr John Dramani Mahama, former Minister of Communication and now Communication Director of the NDC.

After several months of sniffing around the Kuku Hill office of the campaign team, 'The Evening News' has stumbled on the fact that Mr Mahama has been picked ahead of a number of prominent contenders of northern origin.

The rest of the packs are Alhaji Iddrisu Mahama, one-time Minister of Defence; Alhaji Mohammed Mumuni, former Minister of Employment and Social Welfare; Baba Kamara, Treasurer of the NDC and Alhaji (Dr) Mustapha Ali, Member of Parliament for Ayawaso East. 'The Evening News' has learnt that the running mater will be officially introduced to the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the party soon.

A usually reliable source of the Mills campaign headquarters at Osu said Prof. Mills and his running mater had already started vigorous campaign and that, when the party's manifesto was formally launched in Kumasi at the end of this month, the two would be in the thick of events.

The constitution and norms of the NDC reserve the selection of a running mate to the flagbearer, who then submits his preferred candidate to the NEC for approval. Our source explained that Mahama was the sure bet because he had been without blemish and no allegation of corruption had been levelled against him.

“I can tell you Prof. sees him as someone with sound character, integrity and good judgement”, he told 'The Evening News.
