Winneba (C/R), July 9, GNA - The Effutu-Awutu-Senya District recorded 46 motor accidents claiming 10 lives between January and June this year as against 58 accidents with 13 lives lost within the same period last year.

Two hundred and twenty people were injured in the accidents that involved a total of 92 vehicles from June to December last 2003 and so far this year, 113 people were injured in accidents, which involved 62 vehicles.

The District Police Commander, Assistant Superintendent of Police, (ASP) Nicholas Gasu who made this known to GNA on Thursday explained that the reduction in accidents was partly due to constant police patrols and the rehabilitation works on the Winneba-Mallam road that prevented drivers from over speeding.

He, however, appealed to drivers to avoid over loading, over speeding and to obey traffic regulations to prevent accidents. ASP Gasu said criminal cases such as causing harm, causing damage, assaults, stealing, and issuing of threats increased from 386 within the same period of last year to 492 this year.

ASP Gasu said there was one murder case each last year and this year and four armed-robbery cases last year during the period under review.

He said in all the robbery cases, which occurred near Budu Atta, there was no victim and no arrest was made adding that the burglaries took place long before the police had informing on them. ASP Gasu gave the assurance that the Police would intensify its operations to protect live and property and appealed to the public for support.
