Binduri (U/E), June 30, GNA - Mr. Mark Anthony Awuni, 60, a retired educationist, was on Monday elected the new parliamentary candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Binduri Constituency of the Upper East Region.

He defeated Mr. Bernard Achidago, incumbent Member of Parliament (MP), by a single vote, at the party's primaries held at Binduri near Bawku.

Mr. Awuni polled 76 votes out of the 153 valid votes cast, while Mr Achidago polled 75, with two ballots declared invalid.

Addressing the delegates and supporters after his election, Mr. Awuni called for unity and commitment among members to enable the NDC to retain the seat in Election 2004.

He urged Mr Achidago's supporters to place the party's interest above all other considerations to ensure victory for the NDC at the polls.

The Constituency Chairman, Alhaji Osman Kasim Alem, urged party members and supporters not to misconduct themselves, but to use peaceful methods in canvassing for votes. Some members of the Regional Executive of the party supervised the election conducted by officials of the Bawku Office of the Electoral Commission (EC). 30 June 04
