European Union spends 110 billion cedis on micro-projects

Amasaman (G/A), June 29, GNA - The European Union (EU) spent about 110 billion cedis on 1,260 micro-projects in the country between 2001 and 2003.

About 640 micro-projects estimated at about 40 billion cedis are scheduled for completion this year.

Dr Kwaku Osafo, Programme Manager of the Government of Ghana/EU Micro-Projects Management Unit, told newsmen in an interview during the inauguration of a 350 million cedis Mother and Child Community Development Centre at Amasaman in the Ga District on Tuesday. The Mother and Child Community Development Foundation, Ga District Assembly and the EU jointly built the Centre.

The Foundation and the Assembly contributed 250 million cedis while the EU provided 100 million cedis.

Dr Osafo said the projects included schools, clinics, teachers and nurses' quarters, boreholes, markets and libraries.

He said the EU had pledged an additional 25 million Euros for 1,700 projects for a four-year period between 2005 and 2009.

The Programme Manager said all the districts in the Upper East and Upper West, Northern, Central and Volta Regions as well as eight districts in the Ashanti Region and others in the Greater Accra and Eastern Regions were beneficiaries of EU -Micro Projects.
