Eleven persons, who allegedly issued fake vehicle license and other documents of the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) to unsuspecting customers, were arrested by the Tema Regional Police Command in a swoop last Saturday at the DVLA office in the Tema Heavy Industrial Area.

The suspected middlemen, popularly called 'Goro Boys,' have been detained to assist in police investigations.

Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Karim Atuluk, Regional Operations Officer, speaking to a section of the media in Tema after the operation, explained that the suspects would be screened before they are arraigned before court to face the full rigors of the law.

He noted that the exercise would be sustained to clamp down on the activities of the 'Goro' Boys.

The police chief expressed concern about the proliferation of fake documents covering stolen vehicles as result of the activities of the middlemen at DVLA, saying 'with carjacking and heinous crimes on the increase in the Tema metropolis, it has become difficult to apprehend perpetrators as a result of fake documents on vehicles.'

(ASP) Karim Atuluk stated that 'those found to be transacting genuine business on the premises would be released while those found to have engaged in illegal activities would be processed for court.'

Thomas Nintori, the Tema Regional Manager of the DVLA, explained that the activities of the 'Goro Boys' negatively affect the smooth operations of the Authority, noting that they intercept documents that are supposed to be sent to DVLA officials.

According to him, the authority has on several occasions been confronted with the issuance of fake documents to vehicle owners by unscrupulous persons.

He said that although the Authority openly displays its fees and charges at its premises, customers still fall prey to the activities of 'Goro' Boys.
