15 Years In The Cooler....How Pastor Defiled 8 Girls Some As Young As 3 Years
25.07.2014 LISTEN

Nana Akwesi Agyemang, a pastor of the Shiva Linga Church in Abdijan, who defiled eight girls some as young as three years; was on Wednesday sentenced to a 15 year term by Justice Charles Quist of the Accra Fast Track High Court.

Justice Quist found Nana Akwesi Agyemang guilty on all eight counts of defilement and sentenced him to 15 years each, but he is to serve 15 years due to the concurrent nature of the sentence.

The judge stated that with the issues put forth by the prosecution, testimonies of victims and other witnesses, the court had come to the conclusion that the accused was indeed guilty of the charge of defilement.

Family members present at the court expressed mixed feelings at the judgment. The convict's former driver whose daughter he defiled said it was better late than never; 'I am most excited at today's event. It brings closure to this very sad chapter in our lives.

For all the headache and sleepless nights that Akwesi Agyemang caused us, we thank God for bringing us this far. It has been long in coming but it has finally come and we are relieved.'

On her part, an inconsolable mother of two of the victims recounted how the entire Nana Agyemang affair had virtually damaged the future of the children, stating that, 'the experience at his hands has affected the children so much to the extent that my daughters can barely concentrate on anything.

Today they are sick, tomorrow they develop new illnesses, they keep having discharges from their reproductive parts and we as parents are left suffering almost all the time,' she lamented.

The Story
Nana Akwesi Agyemang's sexual escapades came to light in 2006, after he reportedly defiled eight girls (daughters of members of his congregation) living with him at his residence at St. Johns, a suburb of Accra between May and December of the same year.

According to the testimony of all the girls, he defiled each of them repeatedly and would often times threaten them with death and madness if they told their ordeal to anyone, adding that even if they did, no one was going to take them serious.

In December of 2006, he sexually abused a young girl who had been brought from Abidjan and threatened her same, she however sidestepped his threats of death and reported the issue to parents of two of the girls.

The First Arrest and Jumping of Bail
After confirming the defilement reports from their children, the parents reported the case to the police and then Women and Juvenile Unit of the Ghana Police Service following which Akwesi Agyemang was picked up.

He was hauled before a Circuit court where his lawyers applied for got him bailed. He however jumped bail in March of 2012 after a few witnesses in the case had been called to testify.

Information gathered indicated that Nana Akwesi had returned to Ivory Coast where he continued his work as a pastor and dealer in herbal medicines. He would occasionally sneak in and out of Ghana.

Rearrest by Anas Aremeyaw Anas

With reliable information about his movements between Ghana and Ivory Coast, ace investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas intervened in the search for Nana Akwesi and after months of undercover surveillance in Ghana and the Ivory Coast, he was arrested again.

He was arrested at his hideout in Techiman in the Brong Ahafo region, where he had come to on a short visit to his family. After arrest, he was immediately transferred to Accra, where processes were put in place for the restart of the case of defilement against him in the Accra Fast Track High Court.

He applied for bail again, but was refused in a case that he continually pleaded not guilty until Wednesday when he was sentenced by Justice Charles Quist.

One parent summed up the emotions of the others; 'eight children and he was given 15 years jail term, we even expected him to go in for longer but we thank our lawyer and the judges.'
