Fake Doctor Busted At K’Bu

Security guards at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, on Tuesday, arrested a young man, who allegedly posed as a medical doctor and extracted monies from unsuspecting patients.

The young man, “Dr” Derrick Amegbor, until his arrest, was always said to have been seen in a white gown and carrying a stesthoscope meeting patients at the precincts of the various clinical centres of the hospital. Amegbor, who is currently in police custody, had made members of his household at Santa Maria, a suburb of Accra, to believe that he was indeed a medical doctor as he usually left home quite early in his gown and returned late.

Briefing the Graphic yesterday, the acting Chief Security Officer of the hospital, Mr James Brenya, said on May 14, 2004, a lady whose name he gave only as Millicent made a complaint to his outfit that Derrick had defrauded her of ¢80,000 on the pretext of buying drugs for her at the Cardio pharmacy.

He said he subsequently informed all the security guards to be on the lookout for the said “Dr” Derrick.

According to Mr Brenya, he got a note from one Dr Amegbor showing the same telephone number that Millicent had given him as the contact number for Derrick.

He said the note from Amegbor said he helped a lady sometime ago, but she was trying to put him into trouble and, therefore, needed his (Brenya) assistance. Mr Brenya said Dr Amegbor called him at about 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday afternoon and requested to see him at the Accident Centre.

He said when he went to the accident centre, the doctor was nowhere to be found, neither did the nurses seem to know any doctor by that name.While on his way to the office, one of the guards met him at the car park and informed him that one Dr Derrick had left behind ¢80,000 to be given to him to be given to the lady.

As they were discussing the issue, the guard saw Derrick moving towards the Maternity Block and subsequently invited him to the security office.Mr Brenya said when he asked Derrick to identify himself, he claimed he was in his fifth year at the medical school.

According to him, as he was being interrogated, Derrick excused himself to spit but took to his heels when he got out of the office.He said it was onlookers who apprehended him and when he was searched, a plastic bag containing a stesthoscope, a white gown and a fake medical certificate, was found on him.

Mr Brenya said the suspect was taken to his residence, where another stesthoscope and some gloves were found in his room.Mr Brenya said he was then handed over to the Korle Bu Police for further investigations.
