Hohoe District Assembly spends C29.5m on scholarships

Hohoe, May 3, GNA - The Hohoe District Assembly has so far spent 29.5 million cedis on sponsorship of 74 students in higher institutions. Twenty students in Training Colleges, two in University and 10 in Polytechnic, they received 500,000 cedis each. Forty-two other students were also sponsored to Senior Secondary Schools.

Mr James Komla Dogbe, Hohoe District Chief Executive (DCE) said despite all the efforts, the results of the recent Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSSCE) from the district had been "depressing."

On development, he said, 131.9 kilometres of feeder roads were undergoing routine maintenance while, Kpeve-Hohoe and Hohoe-Lolobi roads and drains in the Hohoe town were undergoing construction.

He mentioned projects completed during the past year, as two three-unit classroom blocks at Santrokofi-Benua and Alavanyo-Agoxoe, one kindergarten block at Hohoe-Newtown, one nurses' quarters at Liati-Soba and a teachers' quarters at Tafi-Abuife.

Others are extension of pipe-borne water to Gbi-Wegbe and Godenu and Hohoe town to Hohoe-Low Cost Housing area.

The DCE said 12 European Union Projects under its phase three were on-going with two HIPC projects as well.

Mr Dogbe said for the first time in so many years there has been an increase in revenue generated during the first quarter of the year adding, that this did not happen by chance.

"Steps were taken to ensure that some of the loopholes such as inappropriate accounting for money collected were dealt with including collecting night tolls from traders".

He said out of the estimated 4.4 billion cedis, they collected 5.4 billion cedis including the Common Fund. 03 May, 04
