Koforidua, May 1, GNA- Workers in Eastern Region marked the May Day celebration with a-three-hour clean up exercise in the Koforidua Municipality by desilting gutters and sweeping along the major roads in the Municipality.

After the clean-up exercise, the workers drove in vehicles and converged at Jackson's Park to march with the Eastern Regional Minister, Dr Francis Osafo-Mensah and the Regional Secretary of TUC, Ms Francisca Borkor Bortey taking the salute.

During the march pass, some of the workers were bearing placards some of which read "OSA, two years with no pay", " OSA, no bus, workers are suffering", "Mr President look at OSA and not mass transport alone" and another placard read "Mr President, improve Ghana Rail Transport to improve the economy of Ghana".

Ten deserving workers were later presented with May Day awards for their service to organised labour.

In an address, the Regional Minister, Dr Osafo-Mensah said the Government of New Patriotic Party(NPP) since assuming office, has cushion workers against the negative effects of globalisation on the developing countries by increasing the daily minimum wages on few occasions.

The May Day Anniversary Address by the TUC General Secretary was read by the Regional Chairman of TUC, Reverend Richard K. Yeboah. The Omanhene of New Juaben Traditional Council, Daasebre Professor Oti Boateng who chaired the function said the traditional council would soon outdoor a programme to accelerate investment in the traditional area and called for the co-operation of organised labour.
