Kumasi, April 28, GNA - The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) on Wednesday inaugurated a review committee for the Kumasi Street-Naming Project.

The review committee had become necessary following the successful completion of the compilation of a list of all streets in Kumasi by the previous committee, which was headed by Professor Kwame Arhin. The review committee is to revise, if necessary, the report and recommendations submitted by the previous committee to reflect the cosmopolitan stature of Kumasi and its contemporary history, solicit and encourage individuals and corporate organisations to bid for streets available for naming in the metropolis and also receive, scrutinise and grant applications submitted by those interested in having streets named after them.

Speaking at the inauguration, Mr Anthony Albert Ampong, the Metropolitan Co-ordinating Director, said Kumasi needed to catch up with the rest of the world in terms of providing a more efficient and reliable means of identifying streets.

He said the project would also promote easy accessibility to sites and locations in the metropolis.

Mr Ampong commended the old committee members for their dedication and hard work, which had enabled the assembly identify many streets and areas in the metropolis.

Professor Arhin, chairman of the old committee, on behalf of the members, thanked the assembly for the opportunity given them to serve the people of Kumasi.

He said street names were made to re-enact some important historical events and personalities as a means of honouring them. Professor Arhin hoped the new committee members would work assiduously to complete the project.
