Akosombo (E/R), April 27, GNA - The Workers Union of the Volta Lake Transport Company Limited (VLTC) in Akosombo on Tuesday called on the Volta River Authority (VRA) to retire Mr F Miezah Erzuah, Managing Director of the Company or face consistent workers agitation.

The Workers, who embarked on a two-hour demonstration to press home their demand, said Mr Erzuah was over 60 years and due for retirement in accordance with the Public Service Regulations.

Wearing red bands on their wrists and around their necks and singing war songs amidst shouting and beating of metals, the Workers marched to the Administration Block of the Company to present a copy of their protest letter to the Management.

Speaking to the Ghana News Agency at Akosombo, Mr Martin B. Agbemabiesse, Director of Finance and Administration, explained that Mr Erzuah until his appointment as the Managing Director in 2003 had been the Commercial Director of the Company since 1986.

He said the VLTC Board appointed Mr Erzuah, who was due for retirement as the Acting Managing Director for a year (2002 to 2003).

Mr Agbemabiesse said Mr Erzuah, retired from the Company but the Board re-employed him on a one-year contract from April 2003 to April 2004 pending the appointment of a new Managing Director.

He said Mr Erzuah was to continue at his post as the Managing Director for the first six months and then as a consultant to the new Managing Director for another six months to ensure that the new Managing Director understood the operations of the Company.

Mr Agbemabiesse said as a result of problems the VRA Management had not been able to appoint a new Managing Director and Mr Erzuah had continued to be at post after the expiration of the one-year contract, on April 18, 2004.

He appealed to the Board to respond promptly to the demands of the workers by either renewing Mr Erzuah's contract or appointing a new Managing Director.

Mr Agbemabiesse made another appeal to the workers to exercise restraint and use the available channels of dispute resolution. 27 April 04
