APR 29, 2014 LISTEN

The Energy Ministry says the fire disaster around the Tema Oil Refinery (TOR) will not affect fuel supply to the country.

Communications Consultant at the Ministry Edward Bawa confirmed this to Joy News shortly after pipelines connecting TOR to the Tema Harbour exploded, emitting wildfire accompanied  by a thick dark smoke.

One person was confirmed dead with three fire officers sustaining varying degrees of injuries. Other properties around Tema Cocoa Processing Factory were said to have been ravaged by the fire.

The cause of the multiple explosions have been linked to leakages on the pipelines. Officials of TOR were actually sealing the leakages when the explosion occurred.

There were fears the fire could spread and damage several other properties in and around the refinery. TOR is the major supply of the country's fuel products.

Fire men worked tirelessly to bring the situation under control.

Speaking to Joy News, Edward Bawa expressed regrets at the incident but assured "the refinery was not affected."

He said the incident will not affect fuel supply to the country.
