Tema Central In Danger As Member Of Parliament Fails To Show Leadership

03.04.2014 LISTEN
By Tema Central CPP

We wish to bring to your attention the deteriorating security situation in the Tema Central area of the Greater Accra region and the failure of the Member of Parliament, Hon. Kofi Brako, to show effective leadership in dealing with the situation.

For the past two weeks, residents here have been living in fear owing to the increasing spate of armed robbery and gruesome contract killings. Conservative estimates show that more than 10 robbery incidents have been recorded in the last one week alone. The situation is more pronounced in the Community 4 area where residents have involuntarily imposed a dawn-to-dusk curfew on themselves.

It would be recalled that on March 26, 2014, the owner of Quasam Forex Bereau was gunned down in Community 4 by armed assailants on a motorbike. On the same day, in the evening, on AF Road, two gentlemen named Dada (a welder) and Nagib (a mechanic) were attacked at gun point and robbed of their cell phones. The following day, there was another robbery attack in the same Community 4, around Apple Hotel, in which one person was shot in the leg and others injured. Five days later, the police managed to chase and arrest a gang of armed robbers who were about to launch an operation at the Vera Market area.

Indeed, we do appreciate the efforts of the Ghana Police Service and other security agencies in dealing with the situation. We sympathize with our security officers for the deplorable conditions under which they work. We are very much aware of the inadequate logistics they have to grapple with, on daily basis, as they come up against more sophisticatedly armed bandits. We, however, believe that if the situation is not quickly brought under control, the entire Tema Township would soon come under armed siege.

Our disappointment in the MP stems from the fact that, in all these situations, we have not seen him show leadership by liaising with the Municipal Security Committee to find a lasting solution to this grave security threat. In the past two weeks, for example, the MP has not been sighted anywhere in the Constituency to even commiserate with the victims of the robberies. We have also not heard him raise the matter in Parliament to draw the necessary attention and action.

We wish to use this medium to remind Hon. Brako of the oath he swore to represent the interest of the people of Tema Central. And also, to appeal to him, that if he feels he cannot fully discharge his duties as a Member of Parliament, he steps down for more competent people. At the moment, his incompetence and ineffectiveness is costing too many lives in Tema Central.
