Cape Coast, April 8, GNA- Dr Kofi Kesse Marfo, Commissioner of Police in-charge of operations, on Wednesday called on the men and officers of the police service to discharge their duties efficiently, to justify the huge expenditure the government was making to resource the service.
He pointed out that despite various constraints facing it, the government, was doing its best to equip the service, in terms of vehicles and other logistics to bring it up to international standards. Dr Marfo made the call at the annual 'Wassa' of the Central Regional Police at Cape Coast, during which a number of officers and men of the service, including out-going Regional Crime officer, Chief Superintendent Timothy Buenortey, were honoured for distinguishing themselves in the discharge of their duties.
He said the police was to ensure that the December elections come off peacefully, and exhorted them to refrain from being partial in the performance of their duties.
The Police Commissioner advised them to eschew all acts that have the tendency to drag the service into disrepute, stressing that the profession demands that, "we create a level playing field for all political parties, and ensure that security is provided without any fear or favour to promote peaceful co-existence among the people".
He commended all personnel who won awards and urged them to continue to work hard, and called on those who had not, to emulate their hardworking colleagues.
In a message read for him, Mr Muniru Arafat Nuhu, Cape Coast Municipal Chief Executive, assured them of the assembly's support and collaboration to enable them to discharge their duties effectively.
He said government would continue to attend to their needs, and that it was in the light of this, that rehabilitation work have been started on some block of flats whose construction began about 30 years ago, to solve their accommodation problem.
Chief Superintendent William Twumasi, the acting Regional Commander, in a welcoming address, urged his people "to gird their loins for the great task ahead of them, as very soon the political parties would be hitting the campaign trail".
He stressed the responsibility of the police in ensuring that the peace prevailing in the country was not disturbed before, during and after the elections.
He urged the public to assist the Service to live up to expectation, by reporting any police personnel who misconduct himself for disciplinary action.
Nana Kwame Edu IV, the Tufohene of Oguaa Traditional Area who chaired the function, described the police as an enviable profession that calls for discipline.
