Most registration centres in Ho idle on final day of exercise

Ho, March 29, GNA - Indications are that the two week duration for the Registration Exercise is adequate for eligible and willing voters to register in the Ho Township as all centres visited by the Ghana News Agency (GNA) this morning were without activity. There was virtually nobody at the centres around the offices of the Regional Coordinating Council (RCC) and in the commercial areas people only trickled in one after the other to register.

At the OLA Secondary School Centre "B", only eight people had registered when the GNA called at 1030 hours and 13 people at the nearby Deeper Life Centre. "Looking at patronage for the past four days I don't think there is the need to extend the day of close of the exercise, if anything in the Ho area", Mr Edward Sosu, Registration Assistant at the OLA Centre told the average turn out at his centre at 35 for the past four days. Other centres visited were the Anlo Kordzi Asivime, Church of Christ, Ho Bankoe and Doris Day Premises where the total number of persons registered by 10:53 hours was also 35.

Messrs Gerhard Ameyeh, John Tumaku and Ben Yao Tsey, Registration Officers all said they did not expect any significant last minute rush. Mr Mohammed Adoquaye, Volta Regional Director of the Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC) in a snappy interview with the GNA just before he went on his rounds said he would not recommend any extension for areas under his control, as there was total coverage in the region. "Despite the initial difficulties, things had gone on well and the time was enough for people to register," he stated.
