Political leaders in Volta Region promise to cooperate

Ho, March 27, GNA- Political leaders from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Volta Region on Friday pledged to cooperate for the development of the region. The leaders included NDC Parliamentarians and the Regional Minister, Mr Kwasi Owusu-Yeboah, and the District Chief Executives. They made the pledge at the "Volta Region Political Leadership Dialogue", which formed part of a three-day "Fifth Development Dialogue Series" held in Ho.

It was organised jointly by Ho Community Radio Network (CORANET) and Youth Social Enterprise Fund (Y-SEF) and sponsored by the World Bank.

Both sides discussed poverty in the region and expressed their differences, misgivings, expectations, and commended the warm working relations between some DCEs their MPs.

Mr Steve Akorli, MP for Ho-East, said MPs from the region recognise Mr Owusu-Yeboa as the Regional Minister and would co-operate with him. Mr Owusu-Yeboa also pledged on behalf of the DCEs to strengthen co-operation with the MPs.

He stressed the need for the establishment of good personal relationships among them.

Reverend Father Anthony Kornu, Vicar-General of the Ho Diocese of the Catholic Church, stressed the need for such dialogue in the interest of the region's development.

Rev. Father Kornu said it was only when the two opposing groups of political leaders were seen by their followers in such healthy political and social interactions could bring peace in the region.

The main aim of the Dialogue was to brainstorm on ways to deepen involvement of the people in policy implementation in general and in monitoring the Ghana Poverty Reduction Strategy (GPRS).

The theme for the programme was "Implementing the GPRS at the district level: Strengthening the links of accountability."
