FEB 6, 2014 LISTEN

President Mahama has called on African leaders in the ECOWAS sub region to work hard in order to finalise the trade agreement between ECOWAS and the European Union.

He says his government will continue to provide the right leadership and assistance needed to consolidate the agreement.

“If Ghana signs the EPA agreement, its exports to the European market will be 100 percent exempt from customs and other duties, while exports from the EU to Ghana will enjoy 80 percent exemption from similar duties and levies”.

Speaking at the annual presidential cocktail with members of the diplomatic corps Wednesday, President Mahama said Ghana is hopeful about the prospects of the agreement.

“We must work together especially as a sub-region to see an early conclusion of the Economic Partnership Agreement between ECOWAS and the European Union in order not to disrupt trade between one of our most important regions”

The President also assured the diplomatic corps and ministers present that his government is committed to the achievement of an ECOWAS currency by 2020 and a common monitory convergence by 2015.
