The Federal State with Unitary Enterprise (FSUE) “Roson brononexport” of Russia, has signed a contract Welfind Ltd of the United Kingdom for the delivery of four transport helicopters to the Ministry of Defence.

The delivery of the helicopters is expected to beef up the ability of the Ghana Armed Forces to continue to play a leading role in peacekeeping operations.

A release issued by the Ministry of Defence to the press in Accra, yesterday, said as a result of the agreement, 11 pilots would leave the country for Russia to train in the handling of the helicopters.

The procurement of four transport helicopters had been in the public domain for some time now.

The release, signed by Mr. Frank Mpare, Chief Director of the Ministry of Defence, said with the assistance and co-operation of the Russian Ambassador to Ghana, the obstacles that confronted the procurement processes had been cleared.

Consequently, the ministry has also advised the Barclays Bank and the Ministry of Finance to release the first tranche of the funds for the acquisition of the helicopters.

The release acknowledged the good will shown by the Russian authorities and the cordial relationship that existed between the two countries.

It expressed the hope that the agreement would help to improve the relationship between the Ministry of Defence and its counterparts in Russia.
