Kongo (U/E), March 19, GNA- Registration officials in the Nabdam constituency in the Bolgatanga District of the Upper East Region have refused to work until a concrete decision is taken to review upwards their remuneration.
A spokesman for the officers, Mr. Leopold Engsaar, who spoke to the Ghana News Agency (GNA), said the same applies to the cameramen, laminating and shading officers.
He contended that an amount of 120,000 and 200,000 cedis for the registration period does not measure to the level of work expected to be done.
He said for the country to sustain its reputation in the electioneering process the Electoral Commission (EC) is obliged by its constitutional mandate to give a fair deal in terms of remuneration.
"The commitment to bring transparency into the system forced most of us to take the job, but the trend of affairs seem to suggest that the EC does not want that."
Mr Engsaar said: "We have not yet spoken to any official of the EC, however, we would not work until we hear something concrete from them." At the time of filing this report other registration centres had joined their colleagues on the strike action.
