Nomination Code For The Maiden Edition Of The Daannaa Excellence Awards Launched
Accra, November 12, 2013 - A special code that gives the general public an opportunity to make nominations for the various categories in the Daannaa Excellence Awards for persons with disability and those working in the disability sector, has been launched by the Minister for Chieftaincy and Traditional Affairs, Dr. Henry Seidu Daannaa in Accra.
The annual awards, organized by Emperor Gaza International Foundation (EGIF), an NGO with the technical support of the United Nations Information Centre (UNIC-Accra); the National Council on Persons with Disability (NCPD); Ghana Federation of the Disabled (GFD); and the Association of Sports for the Disabled (ASFOD), is to celebrate and acknowledge the achievements and contributions of persons living with disability, as well as to recognize people who demonstrate excellence, passion, vision and commitment to improving opportunities for people with a disability.
The name of the Awards is branded in honour of Dr. Henry Seidu Daannaa, Minister of Chieftaincy and Traditional Affairs, who is the first visually impaired person in Ghana to become a lawyer and also to be approved as a Minister of State, The Awards ceremony, which will be held on December 8, 2013 at the Holiday Inn Hotel, will bring together la crème de la crème in the disability sector together to celebrate excellence and great achievements.
Persons wishing to make nomination may text their nominee to the text code, 1735 indicating the appropriate category.
The code would enable Ghanaians to take active part in selecting persons worthy of recognition for their contribution to disability affairs.
The categories and sub-categories are listed as follows:
• CATEGORY A: Awards for PLWDs' Achievers in:
Sports
Music
Politics
Academia (Social Inclusion Awards for schools and community groups which have actively built in inclusion and full participation of people with disability alongside other students or members of community groups)
Entrepreneurship
• CATEGORY B: Stakeholders
Awards for individuals or organizations that have advanced the rights of people with disability
Disability Advocacy Challenge Awards for journalists/media institution that have encouraged discussions of disability issues
Business Awards for large and small businesses which have improved opportunities for people with a disability, such as greater inclusion, participation and employment.
Accessible Housing Award for property developers, builders and others in the building sector that have developed innovative and accessible private dwellings for people with a disability
Government and Local Government Award for councils which have implemented substantial changes to improve physical, social, economic and cultural access and inclusion for people with disability and their families
