Aboaboso (Ash), Feb 22, GNA - Farmers at Aboaboso, Watreso and surrounding communities in the Bosomtwe-Atwima-Kwanwoma district of Ashanti, have threatened not to register and vote in this year's elections roads in the area are not rehabilitated.

Mr Kwame Adarkwa alias 'Old Driver', spokesman for the communities told the Ghana News Agency on Thursday that for the past seven years, no vehicle had plied the area due to the bad state of the roads. He said the farmers walk about six miles through a thick forest to the main road to get vehicles to convey their cocoa and foodstuffs to the market.

Mr Adarkwa said market women who come to the junction to buy their foodstuffs cheat them by giving them any price at all for their produce. He said before the 2000 elections, a contractor who was awarded the contract to work on the road from Watreso to Aboaboso started digging trenches for the construction of culverts but when the NDC lost the elections, the contractor abandoned the project.

Mr Adarkwa said even tractors, which were assisting in carting their foodstuffs could not pass now through the trenches adding that, their cassava, cocoyam, plantain and other foodstuffs got rotten daily. Frustrated by this state of affairs, he said, the farmers had decided to advice themselves if nothing was done to relieve them of their plight since they could no longer work very hard on their farms only for their produce to get rotten.
