Speaking to the media in Takoradi, the General Secretary of the scheme, Mr Gabriel Glover, outlined the important role the police played in ensuring compliance by motorists across the sub-region.

He explained the huge responsibility placed on the Ghana Police Service to check policy holders of ECOWAS Brown Cards which guaranteed policy holders with adequate cover against motor vehicle third party risks they incurred in the countries they visited.

The ECOWAS Brown-card Insurance Scheme was established following the endorsement of the 1982 Protocol to enhance the inter-states transports by the Heads of Government of the Economic Community of West African States.

The protocol as amended aims at facilitating free movement of citizens of member states and guaranteeing fair and prompt compensation for damages suffered by victims of road accidents involving international road users.
