Some irate youth at Salaga in the East Gonja District of the Northern Region on Saturday, protested against the nomination of Mr Mohammed Amin Lukman as the District Chief Executive for the East Gonja District Assembly.

In their anger, the youth marched to the office of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Salaga and destroyed its doors, some plastic chairs and party billboards in the town.

Meanwhile the police are said to be looking out for those who masterminded the incident.

A spokesperson for the youth, Mr Abdul Aziz Seidu, told the Daily Graphic that the nominee, a development worker, was not known to them.

"We are not happy at all because we learnt there were three personalities who were shortlisted for that position; what has happened to those men, why were they sidelined and why was a different person, who we do not know and cannot work with, nominated for that position?" he asked.

According to the youth, they were prepared to work with and support any of the three shortlisted candidates and not Mr Lukman.

The District Coordinating Director, Mr Abdul Karim Yahaya, stated that the situation was calm for now as a number of security personnel had been deployed from the Northern Regional Police Command to control the situation.

The Northern Regional Treasurer and Director of Elections of the NDC, Mr Tanko Rashid Computer, indicated that the leadership of the party had entreated the constituency executive of the party in Salaga to talk to the youth to exercise restraint and use approved channels to  make known their grievances known.

He intimated that the leadership of the party in the region condemned the act, adding that they held a meeting with the rank and file of the party in Salaga on Saturday.

Mr Tanko further stated that as regional executive members, they had done their part by screening and shortlisting the candidates for that position and that as to whether or not they would be nominated depended on the President.
