Takoradi, Jan 15, GNA- A farmer of Angu village near Sekondi, Kobina Ampomah, and a driver, John Otoo were on Thursday fined 2.5 million cedis each by a Takoradi circuit court for felling, processing and conveying lumber without authority.

Ampomah and Otoo pleaded guilty and would go to prison for twelve months each if they fail to pay the fines.

Police Chief Inspector Patience Nichol told the court that on December 22, 2003, Ampomah who owns a chain saw machine registered with the Mpohor Wassa East District Assembly, felled a tree at Angu and processed it into 50 pieces of lumber without authority from the Forestry Commission.

She said on the same day, Ampomah engaged the service of Otoo to convey the lumber to Takoradi.

Police found that the two accused persons had no documents that authorized the felling of the tree and conveyance of the lumber and were consequently charged with the offence.
