SOCIAL MEDIA GETS RESULTS; Facebook group, DGG, donates to Apagya R/C Basic School

Most people on social media site Facebook go online to connect with friends and family.

These days, it has become one of the most relevant tools for marketing, networking and other related activities in the world.

On Saturday July 6 2013, a Facebook group, DGG, took the relevance of the site a notch higher by donating books and educational materials to the Apagya R/C Basic School at Apagya, a deprived community in the New Edubiase District of the Ashanti Region, as part of their second anniversary celebrations.

Members of DGG travelled from Lagos, Accra, Kumasi and other places to donate various quantities of RME, Science, Mathematics and ICT textbooks. They also gave the school packets of pencils and pens, cartons of Note 3 and Note 1 books. Additionally, they gave the school Set Squares for the use of teachers and cartons of Maths sets.

'We are a group of fun-loving, development oriented people from different backgrounds. We felt we should do this to help the kids to get some of the resources that will aid them become better people in the near future,' Nana Awere Damoah, leader of the group said.

The Chairman of the programme, Mr Charles Nornoo, admonished the school management to take good care of the items. He further advised the over 150 school children present to 'put their shoulders to the wheel' to achieve success in life.

'We are where we are because when we were your age we really studied hard. We pray that these items we've given you today will help you become better people, people who Ghana will forever be proud of,' he said.

He also promised the team will visit the school periodically to assist them further.

Alex Manu Gyamfi, the headmaster of the school, thanked DGG and assured them the items will be put to good use. He further asked for more support for the school.

Mrs. Barbara Acquah, a member of the group and a teacher at the school, thanked the DGG family for assisting her school when she suggested they should come to the aid of the school.

The members present took the school children through some career guidance sessions and entertained them as well.

Miss Helen Ama Ahiable, a member of the organizing team, describes the whole event as a 'truly humbling and fulfilling experience. The excitement on their faces, their remarks of gratitude made every effort very worth it.'

DGG currently has 174 members, most of them being professionals from different fields bound by their love for Ghana and literature. Majority of them reside in Ghana with the others scattered around the globe.

The group believes that social media, especially Facebook, can be used to turn the fortunes of Africa around and is planning to roll out more of such activities.
