RAILWAYS IN GHANA INDISPENSABLE

Feature Article RAILWAYS IN GHANA INDISPENSABLE
MAY 30, 2013 LISTEN

If I were the government of the day and interested in building the railways in a serious manner in Ghana, first of all, I shall engage in serious dialogue on this issue with two countries that have the raw materials and technology: Sweden and Germany.

Since I am potentially rich but not wealthy such that I can generate all the funds, I shall commence with three lines initially in the country that shall provide capital later that could be used as collateral for future loans to make further extensions in the entire country.

Firstly, I shall build the first rail line from Cape Coast to Accra, passing through Kasoa and major towns around the coast.

Secondly, I shall build another line from Nsawam to Accra serving the major suburbs of Accra right away to the centre of the city.

Thirdly, I shall build another important line from Koforidua to Accra; this should be able to serve Aburi Mountains, Valley View University, Madina, Legon, Airport to Accra.

With these three lines in place, I should be able to negotiate bigger loans to build Accra-Kumasi with little effort. Once these lines run regularly, the country should be capable of making extensions which should include Accra- Somanya-Ho-Aflao- Lome.

This method requires very little initial capital, which any serious nation should be able to follow. These rails would spur Ghana's industrialisation in the end.

But the plan to commence this rail industry should be incorporated with a partnership with a serious banker/entrepreneur in the country such as UT Bank owner, Mr Kofi Amoabeng, who will manage the business otherwise party officials may squander the money during election time. So the money from the rail industry should be solely managed by this serious banker who could pay the loans on our behalf as well as manage the revenue coming into the rail industry without letting the government official have access to them.
