Residents living at Broadcasting Top, an area on the Kasoa-Mallam high way are living in fear as they believe a major disaster could hit the area soon.

The hilly area where individual land owners have built their houses has been inundated with daily sand weaning.

The situation has gradually turned the once beautiful mountain top view into a cone shape which will eventually cave in should any torrential landslide occur, a situation that could cause loss of lives and property.

At certain times when it rain heavily the leftover sand which has been weaned is washed down unto the main road chocking the gutters and inhibiting traffic movement.

Some residents hinted that all efforts to communicate their grievances to the Ga South Municipal Assembly have proved futile and they believe officials of the Assembly have connived with the sand weaners.

Residents have accused the Ga South Municipal Assembly what they described as 'sitting unconcerned' and watching individuals wean sand in the area knowing very well, the danger ahead.

'What I fear now is that we would wake up one day to the realization that the whole mountain has caved in making way for a complete landslide,' Mrs Evelyn Akoto, a resident of the area told The Independent.

"Perhaps this will be another 'Melcom' disaster in disguise if authorities fail to arrest the situation before it is too late," John Osei, another resident of the area told this paper.

According to a resident who pleaded anonymity, they sometimes experience quaking underneath the mountains as a result of the excavators and other machines often used by the sand weaners. According to him, this has weakened his house.

He further hinted that all indication points to the fact that the landslide would happen in no time.

Consequently, he said NADMO and other stakeholders must be ready to fight the situation unless of course the government intervenes on time to avert the disaster.

She called on government to intervene in order to curtail the activities of the illegal sand winners in order to forestall any looming danger.

The Independent can independently confirm that the situation is dire and must be attended to.
