Safety expert calls for heads to roll at ECG

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) is being accused of doing little to improve fire safety at its power substations across the country. This comes on the back of a second fire outbreak at the Achimota substation in four months.

President Mahama on Monday expressed worry at the spate of fire incidents and has called for an immediate investigation into what he says could be a sabotage.

Meanwhile, Director of Safety Ghana, Nana Amihere, is calling for heads to roll. He said for fire to gut the same substation twice is “unacceptable”.

“We were told last time when it happened, it cost the taxpayers' one million dollars to put the substation back again, now it's happen again. If ECG was a private company…would they have allowed that to happen again?” he demanded.

He said those in charge must surely be "sleeping on the job" for fire to gut the substation on two occasions.

But Public Relations Officer of the Electricity Company of Ghana, Tetteh Okine told Joy News the best safety measures are in place and a full assessment report will reveal the cause of the fire accident
