The race for the chairmanship position of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Northern Region is creating tension among the various interest groups in the party.
Though interested parties have not openly declared their intention, serious campaign is ongoing to secure the votes of the delegates.
DAILY GUIDE gathered that plans were far advanced to topple the administration of Sofo Awudu Azorka, Northern Regional Chairman of the NDC party ahead of the party's delegates congress slated for July.
Mr. Azorka, a former first Vice Chairman of the party, became the chairman following the demise of Alhaji Sumani Zakari in accordance with the constitution of the NDC.
He has held the position for over two years and has reportedly expressed interest in retaining it.
But many people who have the backing of some Members of Parliament (MPs) who previously supported Azorka have fiercely opposed him.
Deep throat sources told DAILY GUIDE that Alhaji Ibrahim Mobila is feverishly preparing to win the polls to become chairman of the party after an earlier defeat in the last congress.
According to sources, he enjoys the support of the MP for Tamale South and Minister of Trade and Industry, Haruna Iddrisu and has since launched full-scale campaign.
He is poised to snatch the post from the current chairman despite his woeful performance at the last congress, which saw him garner 14 votes out of the total valid votes cast.
His campaign lieutenants declined to comment on the matter, but it is gathered that motorbikes and other goodies are being distributed to foot soldiers, who constitute the electoral college of the party.
The new entrants are of the view that the current crop of leaders in the party must solely be blamed for the drawbacks in the party and must give way for fresh brains.
They accused the leaders of being incompetent, selfish and greed resulting in the lost of 11 parliamentary seats.
Alhaji Issifu Alhassan Umar, Northern Regional Secretary, insisted that the party's hierarchy devoted itself fully to its cause.
According to him, the aspirants were disintegrating the party.
He told DAILY GUIDE that the executives are currently focused on conducting constituency level congresses, noting that it was too early to discuss issues.
Azorka denied to comment further but disclosed that he was focused on preparing for future elections.
According to him, he has no authority to halt the campaign of his competitors.
Asked whether he was still interested in the post, he told DAILY GUIDE that it was premature to decide but indicated that he will make public his intentions in due course when the need arises.
'For now I am working for NDC in the region to grow bigger and better,' he remarked.
The party recently lost the Kumbungu seat to the Convention People's Party (CPP).
The regional leadership has been heavily criticized but some attributed the development to the actions and inactions of members and MPs in the region.
