On Thursday May 16, 2013, the Ambassador of France, H.E. Frédéric Clavier, has received at the Embassy of France in Accra the Minister of Greater Accra, Hon. Julius Debrah with his team.

The meeting was an opportunity to discuss the on-going activities financed by France in Greater Accra: the AFD (French Development Agency) has financed in the recent past several urban projects including the Urban and Environmental Sanitation Project in Accra (25 M€, completed in 2012), co-financed by the World Bank Currently AFD finances with the African Development Bank the Awoshie-Pokuase road and urban development project (30 M€ from AFD).

France also supports microfinance institutions such as Advans Ghana (one million Ghana Cedis from AFD signed on 26 April 2013) and ID Ghana (Initiatives and Development), a microfinance institution subsidiary of the French NGO Entrepreneurs du Monde (69.000 Ghana Cedis from the French Embassy and 500.000 from AFD). These supports allow small entrepreneurs, mostly women, to get access to credits for their activities.

For the future, the discussion focussed on the possible areas of collaboration between Greater Accra and France: support to microfinance institutions in order to improve the economic insertion of women, strengthening of the technical and institutional capacities of central and local administrations (MDA), wish to benefit more from the experience and expertise of the French companies in the waste management and urban water sectors, via public-private partnerships.

In addition, the French Ambassador stated that AFD is preparing a new financing for an urban integrated management project in four areas of Greater Accra where living conditions of the population need to be improved.
