ADB inaugurates water project in Burkina Faso

Dakola, (Burkina Faso), May 20, GNA- The African Development Bank (ADB), at the weened launched its Water Project at Dakola in Burkina Faso at the cost of 134,553, 405 CFA.

Burkina Faso is expected to bear 20 per cent of the total cost of the facility.

The Water Project, which has a sanitation component is mechanised and powered through solar energy and it is expected to help address the acute shortage of water in the country particularly in the rural areas.

It is also aimed at helping the country to achieve its Millennium Development Goals.

Ms Ginette Nzan-Muteta, a representative of ADB, said despite the global economic crisis her outfit is bent on supporting African countries to address some of their challenges.

Mrs Beleme Mamunatu, Minister in charge of Water and Hydrology praised the ADB for the facility and said it would help address the issue of water and sanitation, a major challenge to the country. 

Addressing the ceremony as one of the guests at the function, the Upper East Regional Minister, Alhaji Limuna Mohammed-Muniru lauded the project and said the ADB had supported Ghana to execute similar projects.

He said the bank's operations in Ghana in 1973   it had invested more than 1.6 billion dollars on concessionary terms in all sectors of the economy.

'In the water and sanitation sector, the bank has financed two projects for close to 88.2 million dollars.  The bank's funding in the water and sanitation sector is fully in line with the country's Growth and Poverty Reduction Strategy,' he said.

Alhaji Mohammed-Muniru said the bank's current project portfolio includes on-going water supply and sanitation projects accounting for almost 13 per cent of net commitments in the Ashanti Region and some other districts in Ghana.

'The objectives are to improve access, quality, availability and sustainability of water supply and sanitation services.'

The Minister led a 10-member delegation on behalf of President John Dramani Mahama to attend the function.

Prior to the main occasion, the Burkina Faso Government inaugurated 20 boreholes and standing pipes at Tiakane of the Nahouri Provence of Burkina Faso at the cost of 75million CFA. Samuel Adadi Akapule, GNA Special Correspondent, Burkina Faso
