CPP takes over Kumbungu seat

Accra, May 1, GNA - A 63-year development worker, Mr Amadu Yahya of the Convention Peoples Party (CPP), has been declared winner of the Kumbungu bye-election conducted by the Electoral Commission on Tuesday.

He won with total valid votes of 13,020 representing 51.80 per cent while his closest contender Alhaji Imoro Yakuku Kpagu of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) polled 11,896 representing 47.29 per cent.

The election was generally peaceful with adequate security personnel including the police and the military who ensured total peace.

In his victory speech, Mr Yahya commended the NDC for giving him 'a hot chase' and promised to work hard to change the face of the constituency to better the lot of the people.

He said the win was a win for the constituency signifying the CPP had been fully re-organised and re-strategized to bounce back to Parliament.

The Kumbungu seat became vacant as a result of the resignation of the former Member of Parliament, Alhaji Mohammed Mumuni to take up the position of General Secretary in the African, Caribbean, and Pacific Group of States.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) boycotted the poll.
Alhaji Hudu Yahya of the NDC speaking to the press after the election noted that the party had not lost hope and pledged the party's commitment to work harder to win back the seat in 2016.
