GMA Rejects Kofi Annan Appeal To Call Off Strike

The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has rejected the appeal by former UN Boss, Kofi Annan to call off their strike, insisting that only a clear commitment from government will get them to oblige.

Mr. Kofi Annan on Tuesday appealed to the doctors to call off their two-week old strike and asked for negotiations to resume between all parties involved.

Deputy General Secretary of the GMA, Dr. Justice Yankson speaking to Citi News, however said they will only return to work if government shows commitment in meeting their demands.

“We have always said that we want a resolution. If the other side is ready to engage us at the negotiating table, we will resolve the matter quickly.

We have even said that if any monies are to be paid, we are ready for them to have a payment plan that would not hamper their inflow so much,” he stated.

Dr Yankson further noted that: “For us, it is not a big deal; the most important thing is let's go to the negotiating table, resolve the issues quickly and we will all get back to work. It shouldn't be too difficult.”
