We have been monitoring the Supreme Court issues regarding the petition filed by Nana Addo Dankwah Akufo and two others, namely,Dr Mahamudu Bawumia and Jake Otanga Obetsebi Lamptey, challenging the legitimacy of President John Dramani Mahama in the December 7,2012 General Election.
As the court process entered day 3, we have observed that, Lawyer Kojo Owusu Afriyie, popularly called Sir John and Mr Johnson Asiedu Nketia, the General Secretary of the opposition New Patriotic Party and the General Secretary of the ruling National Democratic Congress respectively, have been unprofessional and engaging into irresponsibleness' and unprofessionalism in their comments.
In as much as we recognized and appreciate the fact that the Supreme Court issue has two dimensions (legal and political), we believe that, the NDC and NPP as political parties and parties to the suit should allow the spokesperson of their legal teams to speak on the issues alone after the court proceedings, as we have seen right from January to today. The legal teams of both parties are more competent, civil and professional to speak on those issues.
The recent twist of some media houses to call Sir John and General Mosquito after their legal teams have spoken; to also speak on the same issue is unprofessional, uncivil and unethical. Those media houses should desist from that. What Sir John and General Mosquito can do better for now is to split a lot of lies on things that didn't happen in the court room, just to favor their parties and score cheap political points.
Right from last Monday up to date, any time Sir John or General Mosquito speak on the issues, they only make mockery of themselves and their political parties, raise unexpected expectations of their members, directly or indirectly incite them and prepare their minds to reject the final court ruling should it come in the nearest future. These deliberate actions and inactions of the two General Secretaries of the NPP and the NDC has the potential of turning the country into chaos should the final court ruling and determination be given on the petition filed by Nana Akufo Addo and co.
As a responsible society group, we will not wait to see Ghana turn upside down by the parochial interest of Sir John of the NPP and General Mosquito of the NDC. In this regard, we are proposing that, Sir John and General Mosquito should shut down and allow Madam Gloria Akufo of the NPP Legal Team and Mr Nana Ato Dadzie of the NDC Legal Team to speak on the issue, for and on behalf of their clients and their political parties after the proceedings. That is professional, civil and will not raise much tensions and expectations.
We think that, the National Peace Council, the West Africa Network for Peace (WANEP) and other well meaning Civil Society Groups have a greater responsibility to play in this regard. They should stand firm, support us to stop Sir John and General Mosquito to stop raising the expectation of their supporters. The whole world is looking at Ghana, after Kenya have done it smoothly and peacefully. Ghana can do better than that.
On behalf of the Governing Council and membership of the I.Before World Ghana, let me congratulate Mrs Theodora Georgina Wood, the Chief Justice of Ghana for allowing live video, audio and online coverage. These we believe have increase and enhance the democracy of Ghana and Africa at large
We will also like to call on the Presiding Judge, Justice William Atuguba and his panel to allow the fear of God and the love of Ghana to guide them to be fair, firm and circumscribed in handling the case. For they will go into the Guinness book of record as being the people who have maintain and solidify the peaceful credential of Ghana or they will be seen as people who brought chaos in Ghana after the 2012 General Elections, depending on how they choose to administer justice.
Let there be peace now. The Supreme Court or the 2012 General Elections is not the end of Ghana. There was Ghana before the 2012 Elections and the Supreme Court and they will be Ghana after the court determination.
