Ghana Union, Midlands Celebrate Ghana's 56th Independence

His Excellency, Professor Kwaku Danso-Boafo, Ghana's High Commissioner to the United Kingdom of Great Britain, and Northern Ireland, has asked the Ghanaian community in the Midlands to rededicate themselves to serving their country because Ghana is the only country they have.

Prof. Danso-Boafo said, no matter how hard they tried to make someone else country their home or feel comfortable, they can never be nationals of that country, hence the need to help build Ghana.

His Excellency Prof. Danso-Boafo, who was speaking at Ghana's 56th Independence celebration in Birmingham last Saturday, March 16, 2013 said Ghana went through successful elections last year to put in place an elected government led by His Excellency, President John Dramani Mahama.

Those who are not satisfied with the results of the elections are in court, he said, adding “the action by the opposition demonstrates the maturity of the Ghana's democratic process”.

The High Commissioner said the government has persistently promised to stabilise the national economy, to develop and expand the country's infrastructure.

The government, he said, promised to provide more secondary schools by building 200 community secondary schools and build a University in each region, a regional hospital in the Eastern region and upgrade the Polytechnics into Technical Universities.

The government the High Commissioner said, also promised to be transparent in its spending and collection of national revenue and ensure the judicious distribution of projects across the country.

“You may belong to a different political party, you may have different view on national issues, you may even have voted for a different candidate, but let me say that political parties and electioneering process are not a means to an end, the important thing is to identify an individual or a political party to form a government, once that government is in place, we all have to put aside our political differences and forge ahead with the development of the country”. Prof. Danso-Boafo said.

He congratulated the executives of the Union in the Midlands for putting together the Independence anniversary in the area and commended them for being a well organised Union.

In his welcome address, the President of the Union in the Midlands, Dr. Quaye Botchwey said the Union's long term vision was to transform the Union from a social network to a social enterprise to help the Union secure a permanent accommodation that could be called “Ghana House”.

As part of the union's activities, he said the Union embarked on a sales training programme last year to develop a skill base for the Executives Committee members.

Dr Botchwey said the Union in the Midlands collaborated with the Ghana High Commission to secure a number of scholarships from the Coventry University for Ghanaian students to study here in the UK.

Ghanaians in the Midlands, he said have set up a development fund to help realise the long term vision of the Union.
