Mankranso (Ash), Feb 26, GNA - The Ahafo-Ano South District Health Management Team (DHMT) has stepped up its campaign to promote family planning acceptance among the population.

It has targeted for coverage more than 85,000 people in the area's six sub-districts.

Dr Roberto-Frank Otchere, Medical Superintendent of the Mankranso Government Hospital, said this involved holding community education durbars, regular visits to churches and other worship centres to dispel rumours and negative perceptions about contraceptive use.

This he said was a response to the low acceptance rate of family planning methods, which was fuelling unwanted pregnancies with dire consequences.

He told a press briefing at Mankranso that they were already making good progress and that within a space of two weeks of the campaign, about 70 women in single community, Wioso, had accepted one of the methods or the other.

Dr Otchere said unless reproductive health received serious attention, it would be difficult to achieve the Millennium Development Goal 5 (MDG 5 - improved maternal health).

He therefore called on the people to put premium on family planning.

Mr Reuben Bedzrah, the District Director of Health Services, said the DHMT would work hard to make sure that the people have access to quality health care.

He urged the health workers to continue to maintain high standards of professionalism to give confidence to the people.

He announced the start of a training programme on customer care for all the staff to assist improve their relationship with clients.

Madam Felicia Maame Efua Edua, the District Public Health Nurse, underlined the need for parents to provide their children with the right information about sex to prevent them from learning wrong things from their peers.
