Workers on Sofoline interchange strike; demand increased salaries

Ghanaian workers with China-Geo Engineering Corporation, the company constructing the Sofoline interchange in the Ashanti Regional capitsl, Kumasi, Monday morning hit the streets to protest what they say are poor conditions of service.

The workers said they resorted to the action because their Chinese managers had failed to increase their salaries as agreed.

Nhyira FM's Ohemeng Tawiah who was with at the scene reported a charged atmosphere, saying the demonstration had turned violent.

The demonstration was characterized by chaos, he said, noting some of the agitated workers were burning lorry tyres to register their protest.

He said police and firemen were called in to control the situation.
