Kpong (E/R), Feb. 23, GNA - The Evangelical Presbyterian (EP) Church, in collaboration with Compassion International, a Non-Governmental Organization, has rescued 200 needy and vulnerable children in the Kpong community in the Eastern Region.
The church pays the educational fees, hospital bills, cost on clothing and food for each of the children and also gathers them every week-end to assist them in reading and teaching them moral values to augment what they learn at their respective schools.
To properly care for the children, some of whom are HIV victims and disabled, the church has established a Child Development Centre (CDC) where they are taught, encouraged and entertained every Saturday and on vacations by 11 employed volunteer teachers and 150 care-givers.
Speaking to the Ghana News Agency on Saturday, Mr Isaac Kweku Okyere, Programme Coordinator of the centre, said the aim of the programme was to release the children from their economic, social, physical and spiritual poverty and to assist them to become responsible and fulfilled adults.
He said 'We give them the chance to have one-on-one interactions with role models and encourage them that with God, focus, determination and perseverance, they can become great persons in future.'
Mr Okyere expressed gratitude to the Action on African Women Foundation (AFWF) for their assistance to the CDC and however called on other NGOs and philanthropists to come and assist the children with an ICT centre, a library, books, funds, clothes and many other needs to enable it extend aid to all the needy in the Kpong community.
Reverend Alphonse Kwadzo-Kuma, the Kpong District Pastor of the EP Church, said as part of releasing the children from poverty, the church has plans to also train their parents in some trades to be able to generate income for themselves.
He disclosed that some other needy children wish to be part of the programme but the means to include them is insufficient 'so we are calling on individuals and organizations to join us to save these poor children.'
