Youth told to seek guidance before pursuing career courses

Mr William Agyapong Quaittoo, Member of Parliament (MP) for Akyem Oda, has urged Ghanaian youth to ensure that they sought guidance from more experienced personalities before pursuing any course of study in order to avoid going into areas they had no passion for.

“Most students make mistakes in their choices of subjects because they do not look within themselves to know exactly what they are capable of doing; they must seek counseling to be able to choose their career courses correctly,” he said.

Mr Quaittoo was speaking to the Ghana News Agency at Akyem Oda during a Career and Relationship Enhancement Conference dubbed: “Breaking the Barriers of Success 2013” held by the Church of Pentecost.

The MP expressed worry that most youth graduate without any specific goal to achieve for their lives, saying, "they come out without any initiatives to make life meaningful for themselves than to resort to seeking white color jobs which are very few".

“Students should avoid studying just any course for the simple notion that it is lucrative or that they just want to be at the university.

"They should sit down, know themselves and identify what they can do and pursue them,” he said.

Mr Quaittoo was of the view that due to economic hardship, parents concentrated much on struggling to get their daily bread at the expense of their children's upbringing, urging they should try to have time for their wards in order to “walk them through life.”

He urged schools to strengthen their guidance and counseling units so that the students could be well guided in choosing their future career programmes appropriately.

Mr Quaittoo also urged successful old students of the various secondary schools to make regular visits to their Alma matter to interact with the students “since the mere sight of them could encourage these youth.”

The conference is held annually by the ambassadors of the Pentecost English Worship Centre, the youth wing of the Akyem Oda New Town District of the Church of Pentecost.
